# What is a safe zone in a video ad?

A safe zone is the area of a video ad where text, logos and key visuals will not be cropped or covered by the app's own interface, such as the profile icon, the caption and the call-to-action button. On a 9:16 ad it is the middle of the frame, with margins at the top, bottom and sides.

## What the platforms say

- **Meta** defines the safe zone as the area where important elements will not be cropped out or covered by the user interface. For 9:16 ads in Stories, Reels, Feed and Facebook in-stream reels, it says to keep the top, bottom and side edges clear of key elements. If your Reels ad includes disclaimers, Meta says to leave the bottom 40% of the ad clear of text, logos and other key elements. Ads Manager has a Safe zone guardrail toggle that shows the area as a yellow overlay.
- **TikTok** says the safe zone size depends on the dimension (vertical, horizontal or square), the ad caption length and any extra formats used, and it offers downloadable safe zone files.

## How to use it in a singing ad

Three things must survive the interface: the captions, the product and the end card. SingingAds burns word-by-word captions into the video, so before you post, upload the MP4 in Ads Manager, switch on the safe zone overlay or lay the platform's template over a frame, and scrub through. If a caption line or the web address on the end card sits under the overlay, shorten that shot's words (you can change any shot's words before the video is made) so the caption takes fewer lines, and on TikTok try a shorter ad caption.

## An illustrative example

Illustrative example: a made-up pet treat brand, Biscuit Barn, writes a long TikTok ad caption with three lines of text. On preview, the longer caption pushes the interface up and covers its offer card's lower line. The fix costs nothing: a shorter ad caption, and the offer moved to the upper half of the card.

## Common mistakes

- Putting the price, a disclaimer or the web address at the bottom of the frame, where buttons and captions stack.
- Using one safe zone for every platform. TikTok's depends on the caption length; Meta's changes with aspect ratio and placement.
- Checking only the first frame. The end card is where most text lives.
- Ignoring very tall phones, where Meta may zoom the ad and crop beyond the safe zone.

## Questions

**What is the safe zone for Instagram Reels ads?**

Meta says to keep the top, bottom and side edges of 9:16 Reels ads clear of key elements, and to leave the bottom 40% clear if the ad includes disclaimers. Use the Safe zone guardrail in Ads Manager to see the exact area.

**Does TikTok have a safe zone template?**

Yes. TikTok offers downloadable safe zone files on its in-feed ad specs page and notes that the safe zone depends on dimension, caption length and extra formats.

**Do captions need to be inside the safe zone?**

Yes. Burned-in captions outside it can be hidden under the app's caption, buttons or profile icon, which defeats their purpose for sound-off viewers.

**Is the safe zone the same on Facebook and Instagram?**

Meta gives the same guidance for 9:16 ads across Stories, Reels, Feed and Facebook in-stream reels. Non-9:16 ads in Instagram Feed only need clear bottom and side edges.
